Abdera
Abdera was one of the most powerful city-states in Thrace. It was built in the mid- 7th century BC by Ionian colonists from Clazomenae, a city in Asia Minor. The archaeological research brought to light architectural remnants and movable artifacts that bear witness to the city’s wealth and prosperity.

Polystylon
The ancient city of Abdera was renamed Polystylon during the early years of the Macedonian Dynasty and it became the seat of the diocese. Byzantine historians and chroniclers mention that Polystylon was a rather important fortified seafaring city during the Byzantine period.
