Klidonas or Kalogiania (augury)


A custom preserved by Sarakatsani of Rodopi’s Prefecture. It is performed at their traditional settlement in Porto Lagos (borders of Rodopi’s Prefecture with Xanthi’s Prefecture) on the 24th of June, coinciding with the celebration of St. John “Klidonas”.

Tzamala


A Custom located in Eastern Thrace. It is performed every year at the end of October at Nea Adriani of Rodopi’s Prefecture. A ritual and rural custom for good fortune connected with seeding and realized through dramatized action. It is performed with varations at Stavroupolis, Xanthi, during carnival. This custom was long before performed with varations at Vrisika, Evros.

Folk ritual of stealing


Custom of Eastern Thrace, Malgara region, performed on the 26th of February, on the eve of St .Theodori celebration, at the villages: Pamforo, Egiros and Roditis. Young men of the village grouped in small teams run to the yards of the girls’ houses at 12 midnight. These girls are old enough for marriage. The young men steal tools, carts, carriages etc. and place them at the village’s central square where they are found by the parents of the girls during the next day.

Piperouga


A kind of litany for inviting rainfall. It was performed in variations at many Christian Orthodox and Muslim villages of Drama’s and Rodopi’s prefecture. The names of it are Perperitsa, Perperouga, Perpeloutka, Perperouna or Doudoula. Nowadays it is performed at Nea Adriani by the Cultural club of women.

It is also called “the custom of fire”. People light up fires, bake lalagites (pancakes), wear the martis (a red and white bracelet) and celebrate the arrival of spring. It is also performed in variations by the Cultural club of women at Mesi, Paradimi and Pamforo.

Deve (camel)


A male company performs the bridal parts. A man dresses as a bride, another one as a groom and the rest as relatives of the couple. The company visits the houses of the village or Machala (neighborhood) and they perform parts of the wedding ritual. In the end they accept money offers. Late at night a ghlendi begins.

Babo


A celebration of fertility and for a fortunate new year performed only by women. It is devoted to Babo, the midwife of the village, at the beginnings of the new year, on the 8th of January, and coincides with the period of the Dodekaimeron, a carnival period for Northern Greece leading to masquerades and loosness accepted by the local community as actions for a happy and fortunate year. . It is performed at Rodopi: Xilagani, Proskinites, Strimi, Dioni, Krovili, Sapes, Imeros, Fanari, Roditis. In Xanthi’s prefecture: Nea Kesani, Magana. Drama’s prefecture: Kali Vrisi and Volakas. Minor alterations in Rodopi: Xilagani, Proskinites, Strimi, Dioni, Krovili, Sapes, Imeros, Fanari, Roditis. Xanthi’s Prefecture: Nea Kesani, Magana. Drama’s Prefecture: Kali Vrisi and Volakas.

Momogeri / Momogeria


Popular, satirical ritual with pre theatrical form. It is performed by Pontians with variations at the prefecture of Drama (Platania and Sitagri) and Rodopi (Thrilorio). The revival is performed at the houses’ yards and the squares during the Dodekaimeron (between the 17th of December and the 1st of January). The main protagonist is Momogeros or Kiti Gotsas with his company: the bride and the groom, Ali (a man on a horse), the father and the doctor, the musician, the best man, the ranger, two little devils, the pregnant woman and their company.

A kourban on the day of the celebration of St. Athanasios, the 2nd of May, is performed in honor of the saint in villages like Strimi, Rodopi and Dadia, Evros. A calf is butchered and eylogized by the village’s clerical, cooked at the church’s yard and offered to the ones attending.

Wrestlers from Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria wrestle for three days. Thousands of visitors at mountainous area of Chilia, Rodopi, at the beginnings of August (the three day fest is not organized every year in the same date).

Hanging of the egg and the dance with the brush


The Cultural club of women of Strimi (Prefecture of Rodopi) is creating a ghlendi in the last Sunday of Carnival, where women revive the traditional custom of dancing with the brush that has a satirical and recreational character. They also entertain themselves with the custom of “the hanging egg”. According to this custom, women are sitting in a circle with their hands tied up, trying to grab a boiled egg with their mouth. The egg is hung with a thread which is fixed at a long piece of wood.
