The quadrilateral towers and some sections of the double wall survive from the impressive ruins of a Byzantine fortress found on a small hill at the village of Avas, north of Alexandroupolis. Traces of a settlement and of fortifications were found at the area dating to the prehistoric and archaic era. According to an opinion, the castle and towers were constructed by the Gattilusi or the Byzantines and served for the defence of the coastal regions against the Bulgarian incursions. Later studies identify the fortress with the Byzantine Peristeriá.
