The excellent late Byzantine icon of Christ Pantokrator and the wonder-working icon of Theotokos Vrefokratousa from Didymoteicho are preserved in the post-Byzantine church of Christ the Saviour at Didymoteicho. The second icon, painted in both sides, dates to the first half of the 14th century, and bears the representation of the Crucifixion on the reverse side and was probably an imperial gift to the city. The church was built in 1846 with stone arched superstructure and has a high value wood-carved iconostasis elaborated by Stamatis Taliadouros, a wood sculptor from Madytos.
