The important Armenian church of St George (Sourp Kevork) at Didymoteicho dates to the years 1826-1831. It is built on the site of the earlier Byzantine church of St George Palaiokastritis, where Ioannis VI Cantacuzenus was crowned emperor on October 26, 1341.
