Archaeological surveys in the area of the village of Amaxades, at the site of Mal-tepe, revealed a settlement – tumulus dating from the Neolithic Era, along with superficial pottery from the prehistoric times.
The ruins of an early Christian – Justinian wall (6th century AD) were found to the south of the modern village of Amaxades that might have also been the aqueduct for the water supply of the Byzantine city of Peritheorion. In the Byzantine times Anastasioupolis was built in the wider area, which in modern times was named Arabatzi-Kioi.
