The Municipality of Oreino is located at the northeastern part of the Prefecture of Kavala. It has a population of 1,769 inhabitants who are mostly farmers. The Municipality includes the settlements of Lekani, Aghios Kosmas, Dipotamos, Dysvatos, Elaphochori, Kechrikampos, Makrychori and Platamonas. The area is famous for the scenery of unrivalled beauty. It is surrounded by woods with great aesthetic value and biodiversity. The beech forest of Lekani lies at a height of 1,300 metres and affords a route of unrivalled beauty. On the confines of the Municipality are the Straits of Nestos river, which is an important ecosystem protected by international treaties. The “aesthetic forest” of the Straits of Nestos is situated in this area, where many ecotourism activities take place like watching rare birds of prey, rafting, etc.
The Municipality is seated at Lekani, where the Agrotourism Enterprise runs a restaurant in the wonderful beech forest. The potato festival is also held every year in the beginning of September, in Lekani. There is a museum of Folklore art with exhibits from the time of the tobacco cultivation. A modern guesthouse operates in the picturesque square with the plane trees in the village of Kechrokampos, where visitors may visit several traditional taverns to savour local gastronomy.
The local boiled goat is a dish holding an honorary post during the Farm festival in Platamonas. In winter, the area is ideal for the hunting of wild boars and other wild birds. Visitors who take a walk in the “aesthetic forest” will be delighted by the rich flora consisting of tree peony, orchids, anemones, violas etc. The municipality also affords the opportunity for religious tourism. The Monastery of the Nikites with the wonder-making icon of the “Transfiguration of the Saviour” is a popular pilgrimage point on 6 August, in the abandoned settlement of Nikites. The “Epirotic Bridge” is located at the settlement of Dysvaton, which is a virgin area as the name Dysvaton implies (in Greek dysvaton means field of difficult access).
