The Arzos river is divided in two parts; the upper part is now called Sjujutlijka and the lower Sazlijka. The river is cited in a sort of a traveling book from the late antiquity. In some medieval sources, it is wrongly associated with Tonzos (Tuntza) river, which appears to join two other rivers near Adrianople.

There was a settlement under the same name next to the river. The excavation works carried out in the area revealed a tumulus and several items dating back to the 4th century BC. A bronze helmet was uncovered along with a bronze beak-mouthed oinochoe, a bronze basin and numerous vessels. Finds are on exhibit in the Komotini Archaeological Museum.
