The emblematic Aqueduct (popularly known as Kamares) is one of the most impressive monuments in the town of Kavala, built on the boundary between the old and the new town.
Erected by Süleyman the Magnificent (1521 – 1566 AD) on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification structure, it supplied the city with water from the springs of mount Symbolon. The Aqueduct contains 60 apses of four different sizes with a maximum height of 52 metres. The double wall on the top of it, originally served for protective and defensive purposes, carried water to the whole town that had developed a water fountain system close to its entrances.
