The area constitutes one of the most important biotopes of Greece regarding large mammals (bear, wolf, boar, deer). In the area we can find 102 bird species all of which live and reproduce in the local forests. Many of these species are found exclusively in this area, or the mountainous area of Rodopi, including the species Tetrao urogallus, Bonasa bonasia, Glaucidium passerinum,Aegolius funereus and Nucifraga caryocatactes.
