The railroad line connecting Thessaloniki and Alexandoupolis passed through the area. The railroad was constructed in the beginning of our century in such a way as to protect as much as possible the surrounding natural environment, including successive tunnels and beautiful masonry walls. The small abandoned station of Livera is situated at about the midpoint of the route.
The area boasts touristic activity, with visitors hiking across the picturesque paths or kayaking downriver. Agricultural activities are also intense in the area, mainly with the cultivation of corn and potatoes. Livestock-farming is limited to cattle.
