The Narrows of Nestos are an area of increased ornithological interest. It has been characterized as an Important Region for Birds and is being constantly monitored by the Hellenic Ornithological Company. The Narrows of Nestos boast a variety of 213 bird species, many of which are characterized as endangered at national or international level (3 endangered species at world-wide level - Aquila heliaca, Aquila clanga and Falco naumanni-, 8 at European level, 41 at national level).
