The city of Drama, which is the capital of the Prefecture under the same name, is situated to the north of the Prefecture of Kavala, at a distance of 35 km far from the archaeological site of Philippi. Fragmentized remains of the fortified enceinte are preserved in the historic centre of the city of Drama. The enceinte was developed in the 10th century AD and reinforced in two later phases, the most important being that of the year 1206 AD under Boniface I of Montferrat, commander of the castle during that time.

The castle encloses an area of forty thousand square metres and is built on an upland site, safe from the waters of the area. Six rectangular towers and part of the curtain walls survive in the city centre. The towers and the ramparts must have reached a height of 14 m, while their width ranged from 1.70 to 3.30 m. The walls must have been built with layers of stones intersected by horizontal courses of fragmentized plinths and had two double staircases leading outside the fortification.

The additional works that have been carried out at the walls bear witness to their continuous use until the period of the Turkish occupation.
