The region of Komnina is situated in the Northwestern part of the Prefecture of Xanthi, 5km north of the Municipality of Stavroupolis.

The village of Komnina is built at the southeast foot of mt. Achladovounio (Tsal) at an altitude of 127m. The valley of river Nestos is situated to the west. The natural environment - the verdant mountains, the beautiful Narrows of Nestos, the wild orchids that grow amongst the wildflowers - constitutes the main object of attraction for visitors. A large number of protected animal species, including many predatory birds, live and breed in the area. The part of the river Nestos that runs through the area, and specifically the Narrows of Nestos, includes a wide variety of biotopes, including the water surface, the river banks and some small islands.

In the region of Komnina one can find agricultural fields and grazing grounds, as well as anthropogenic settlements. At higher altitudes the fields are replaced by lush forests of oak and beech.
