In the early 19th century a wealthy tobacco merchant, called Michael Metaxa Matsinis, was born in Xanthi. Matsinis lived and died in Odessa of Russia. Because he had a great love for his homeland he decided to help its young generation receive schooling. He decided to found a school in Xanthi for the purpose and to recruit it with the suitable academic personnel. He established the ‘’Matsineios’’ School for which he erected a spacious building and allocated the suitable resources for its maintenance and operation. In 1895 the ‘’Matsineios’’ School had more than 260 scholars.
