St. George’s kourban

St. George is one of the most popular saints in some villages of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, especially Lira, Evros, where they worship the saint with kourbania (sacrifices of lamps). All the families prepare the kourban on the eve of the saint’s celebration. The meat is ritually cooked. A ghlendi at the village’s central square follows after dinner.
